Contrast ratio is an important spec when looking for a suitable powerpoint projector or media projector. Contrast ratios deal with the projector's ability to display dark/black colors.
If you think about it, a projector is a bright light shining on a (normally) white screen. Yet when you watch a movie on one you HAVE to be able to see black. It's counter intuitive that a bright light can generate a black color, but it is possible with a little image trickery.
That is where contrast ratios and lumens come in. Higher contrast ratios will be on the more expensive projectors. A higher contrast will give you much more defined blacks and darks. The overall picture quality will be improved by this.
While LCD projectors hold their own when it comes to contrast ratios, DLP chips have an advantage. Recently some DLP projectors got an added bonus of something called "dark chip technology". This technology adds great contrasts without the expense of lumens.
